4 Things You Didn’t Know Are Making You Sick

Here is an article written by Talia King. This is a special article that highlights the many factors one need to consider when trying to find the root cause of an illness. Our habits and lifestyle are minor or major reasons, but when left unaddressed, it could be the things that are making you sick last longer than you would like.

Good health is something all of us want, so we eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and try to get enough hours of sleep. While these are good habits to have, there are also a lot of common practices that pose health risks. Read on to learn four things that actually make you sick. You might be unknowingly sabotaging your health.

Touching Your Face

Our hands are everywhere. It’s what we use to wash the dishes, type on our computers, and take out the garbage. So it isn’t surprising to know that it’s unhygienic to touch your face. It’s an easy way to transfer germs to your mouth and nose — the main way viruses enter the body. Make sure to wash your hands every time you touch bacteria breeding grounds, like keyboards, doorknobs, and cellphones. And even then, refrain from touching your face altogether. It’s a bad habit that needs to be unlearned. One way to do this is to practice self-monitoring, so that you can catch yourself before your hand touches your face. Once you’re aware of how often you practice face touching, you can work towards replacing it with another action, like sitting on your hands or clenching your fists.

Financial Stress

Too much stress can never be good for our health, but financial worries, in particular, have detrimental effects. We all know that getting sick can lead to stress brought about by additional expenses, but it’s actually a two-way street. Research has shown that regularly worrying about money can result in poor physical health, specifically a rise in blood pressure, blood glucose levels, and drops in mental health. The key to managing financial stress is training the brain to be more rational about money matters. Acknowledge your feelings — be it frustration, anger, or sadness — and then appeal to the decision-making part of your brain. By working towards shifting your mindset, it’ll be easier to deal with financial issues and, consequently, easier to avoid the stress that stems from it.

Overloading on Vitamins and Supplements

Loading up on vitamins and minerals is essential for good health, but too much of a good thing is bad. Vitamins A, E, D, and K are toxic to the human body if taken in excessive quantities. More specifically, Vitamin D can lead to vomiting, lethargy, bone pain, and kidney problems if taken in excess. Meanwhile, too much Vitamin C can lead to vomiting, heartburn, migraines, and insomnia. To ensure that you’re ingesting the right amount of vitamins and supplements, consult your doctor.

Your Relationships

Just like financial stress, you may not automatically connect your relationship with your boyfriend/girlfriend, spouse, or even your friend, as being the cause of any illness. Yet, studies have shown that a toxic relationship can lead to chemical imbalances and eating disorders, respiratory, digestive and immune system issues, and even sexual function disorders. If you are unhappy with a person in your life, this may be causing you to be sick more often. Consult a therapist who will be able to help you.

Do any of the above sound familiar? Well then, it’s time to start unlearning some bad habits. It might take some time, but the end goal is worth it.
