    Are you experiencing pain, numbness, or weakness in the area going from your lower back all the way down your leg? And does it get worse when you move, cough, or sneeze? Then, you might have sciatica.

    This is a fairly common ailment that affects many Americans each year, with varying degrees of intensity. If your sciatica is mild, chances are that it will go away on its own over time. But if you’ve been battling with sciatica for a while, it’s now time to do something about it once and for all.

    You’ve come to the right place: keep reading and we’ll give you the lowdown on sciatica. We’ll explain what it is, what causes it, how to treat it, and how to prevent it from re-occurring.

    What Exactly Is Sciatica Pain?

    The term “sciatica” refers to pain in a very specific area that goes from your lower back down to your leg, foot, and toes, passing through your glutes. This occurs when the sciatic nerve becomes inflamed or irritated.

    The type of pain, as well as its severity, caused by sciatica, can vary. Some people experience a pins-and-needles kind of pain and numbness, while others may feel in real agony.

    Sciatica shouldn’t be confused with lower back pain. While the lumbar area can be painful in people who suffer from sciatica, localized lower back pain with no other symptoms is usually not enough for a diagnosis of sciatica. Also, unlike lower back pain, sciatica pain generally focuses on one side of the body.

  • Common 3 structures in your lower back that you need to know before having lower back surgery.

    You have back pain that is tight, stiff, or sharp. Your morning pain could be something you are having a hard time shaking off. Or is it the idea of picking something off from the floor? With many people experiencing lower back pain, there are only a handful of lower back pain diagnosis that account for the majority of the lower back cases. We will be addressing three important structures in your lower back region that is playing a role in your spinal health, rehabilitation, and recovery.

    Let us start out by establishing the 5 common diagnosis you may have been told.

    • Lumbar disc herniation, bulge, “slipped” disc, or other various disc related pathologies
    • Lumbar spine stenosis or spondylosis
    • Lumbar spondylolisthesis or instability
    • Sacroiliac joint dysfunction or pain
    • Muscle sprain or strain

    These diagnosis are part of a sequence of spinal stress and loading patterns that the lumbar spine goes through but has trouble sustaining and recovering from these load patterns. Basically, you are not trained to do what you are doing or not recovering sufficiently, so the lumbar disc, vertebral body, facets, or neighboring muscles and joints fatigue and “fail”.

    We quoted the word FAIL because failure of the anatomical structures has no connection to pain and mobility over the long term. You may feel pain for years, but research have demonstrated with high level of evidence that structures does not equate to severity of symptoms. The interpretation, process, and ability to execute certain movement skills WITH a combination of a comprehensive protocol of sleep hygiene, blood sugar regulation, and emotional health are factors that have been highlighted as being more important to spinal pain.

    Basic Anatomy 101: Sciatic Nerve

    Your sciatic nerve is a combination of your tibial and common fibular nerve. At this junction, the two bundle of nerves connect to your four hamstring muscles and adductor magnus muscles. Your hamstring muscles consist of your semimembranosus, semitendinosus, long head bicep femoris, and short head bicep femoris muscles.

    Basic Anatomy 101: Muscle

    Did you know that your Hamstring Muscle is a group of 4 muscles?

    You have two muscles located on the inner back thigh called the Semimembranosus and Semitendinosus muscle. These two muscles connect to the ischial tuberosity of your pelvis. There is a ligament called the Sacrotuberous ligament that helps to connect the work energy of the Hamstring muscle to your pelvis, and vice-versa. Basically, the ligament is the bridge between what is happening at the pelvis, hip joint, femur bone, and knee joint. This is an important concept to remember for later.

    You have two muscles located on the outer back thigh called the Bicep Femoris Short and Long Head muscle. The same-origin connection of the Bicep Femoris muscle goes for this group. They have a fascial connection to the Sacrotuberous ligament. This ligament plays a role in being a part of the sciatic notch and important to remember as we will elaborate more below on how muscles impact spinal health and the surround nerves, such as the infamous sciatic nerve.

    As we go back to the two outer hamstring muscles, you will see that both Bicep Femoris muscles connect to the outer aspect of your tibia and fibula. As a muscle crosses over a joint, it plays a role in stabilizing and protecting that part of the joint. The Lateral or Fibular Collateral Ligament (LCL) runs intimately close by. If you have an issue with the LCL and sprain your lateral knee, the lateral hamstring muscles will be important in your Physical Therapy Sports Medicine rehabilitation.

  • Let The Lion Eat Me!

    “Let the lion eat me!” said a middle aged, well kept lady diagnosed with fibromyalgia.  What?!!! Are you kidding me?  I said in my head.  I am suppose to teach her how to handle life’s curveball NOT throw me one.  Shocked and confused, I stood there wondering what is the right response to that would be.  “Ummm…”  It took a brief moment for me to collect my thoughts but I responded, “Let’s tame the lion instead and reconsider that later.”

    “True” Sciatica is where the sciatic nerve is inflamed and irritated.  (Pseudo) “leg pain” sciatica is when the irritation is coming from the spine, which includes spinal nerve and possible tissues surrounding the spine.   (more…)
