  • 3 Knee Arthritis Exercises Prescribed by a Knee and Sports Medicine Rehab Specialist

As the only Holistic Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Physical Therapist in Long Beach, I marvel at the simplicity of our knee design.  The knee architecture is deceiving in my journey of helping people stay active when dealing with arthritis in knee.  This article will summarize my favorite 3 knee arthritis exercises that I prescribe to many who are successfully avoiding or delaying a total knee replacement at my clinic.

Although the knee is simple in design it relies on your whole body to capture the functionality of the knee.   What I mean to say is that the knee is a victim of how you use your whole body: ankle/foot, hips, pelvis, spine, shoulder, head/neck, and inner ear system.

Here are three quick examples to help you see the big picture.

There are more options and hope to counteract the stress to your knee. We understand that when you have been told to have an unchangeable fact of having knee arthritis, mensicus tear or bad alignment, it is very hard to believe that you can still function and stay active. Here is a list of people that we have helped over and over again.

    • If you cannot feel the ground well, how can you expect your knee to know how to help you to walk, navigate stairs or run?
    • If we put you on a rocky raft where you definitely will have balance issues (many do not know they have this until tested), you will automatically try to stay low to the ground to stay safe.  Your knee muscles are compressing your meniscus and arthritic knee joint to protect you from stumbling.
    • Did you know that there is a sensory nerve called the saphenous nerve that gets tugged and tensed when you have digestive disorder?  This nerve mimics medial (inside) knee pain.

Consumer Report recently wrote an article that says having knee surgery is too risky.  There is a recent research article that demonstrated having knee meniscus clean-up has the same result as a sham surgery?  Sham surgery is where they open up to portal incision and stitch them back up without doing anything inside.

The article supports what the recent Orthopedic and Physical Therapy research have been talking about for the past 10 years, but not publicized enough.  A top surgeon can fix a knee design but it is the whole body that drives how you make of your “surgically-fixed” knee.  You can improve your chances of having less knee pain, even when diagnosed with arthritis or meniscus injury if you read along.

I have been a Sports Physical Therapist and Fitness Performance Specialist for 13+ years and clinical frustrations came when I use to chase after all the fancy exercises and therapy techniques.  When I would ask the gurus of knee surgery and rehab, I would get a sense that everyone talked a nice game but had the same struggles as me.  Reassuring for me but didn’t help me solve the difficulties of helping a small portion of people in pain.

  • When is an Expert NOT an Expert

Expert is defined as person who has a comprehensive and authoritative knowledge of or skill in a particular area.  It is common knowledge and agreeable across all fields that the true experts understands the basics very well.

Over this past week, I have been talking to many people who are seeking for a holistic or relief for their chronic pain.  I did my first online webinar presentation to bring awareness to a rare genetic disease called Mitochondria Myopathy where 20% live to age 20!  If you would like to watch this mito video (click here).  The two experiences has allowed me to focus on what makes me be an expert in holistic medicine.  At the bottom of this article are my 3 simple rules of being an expert in medicine. • 3 Exercises That Will Help Your Shoulder That No One is Talking About

Did you know that our shoulder is designed to give us the ability to be dynamic and not for true power and strength?  This reason is why many suffer from chronic shoulder tightness and pain.  My best analogy when restoring peoples shoulder back to normal is a juggler juggling from a unicycle.  Read my article “Juggling The Juggler” to get the most out of this article.  I talked about shoulder is an upside-down ball and socket joint.  Think a ball spinning around a bowl that is inverted.

There are four categories that everybody should think about when training: strength, mobility, coordination/integration, and endurance.  The internet is filled with youtube and articles on stretching your shoulder including the across the body

    rotator cuff

arm stretch and over the back stretch.  If you are dealing with a shoulder injury, you most likely have heard about the rotator cuff muscles.

If you have shoulder pain, it is important to rehab these muscles but I find that people stop there.  It is painful for me to watch people do these rotational based exercises and think this is the magic answer.

Since we are on this topic, many people are misinformed about the dosing of the rotator cuff exercises. (more…)

  • 3 Tips That Will Help You or Your Child’s Upcoming School Year

It is that time again.  Back to School.  While everyone is scrambling to get school supplies, parents and students forget about keeping our body in tip top shape to withstand being squished in those school desk and chairs.  The boom bust cycle of being active during summer to slow down to a turtle’s pace can be just as bad for our body.  Below are three concepts and tips to help get better grades, enjoy the school year and be healthy.

Posture tends to get sacrificed and this impacts our IQ and internal health like circulation and oxygen use.  A study demonstrated that a straighter spine improved one’s ability to map new experiences and memory.   A similar study showed the same results of improved objects of cognition based on our body’s positioning.  My wife is an educator and she loved using Amy Cuddle’s 2012 Ted Talk for herself and to empower students to find ways to enhance their days.   (more…)

  • The Circle of Life

Are you the type that thinks you are in control of your destiny?  Or are you the type that thinks luck and good karma energy controls your destiny?  Whichever side you lean towards, life most likely reinforced your belief through positive experiences.  What is pain?  What is inflammation?  What is cancer?

I have been having this conversation with many people, patients, and friends, in regards to illness, pain and our choices we make.  This topic of choices and its impact on everyone’s desire to age well will be split into two parts.  Medicine and getting good care does not have to be complicated.  I believe a lack of KISS (keep it simple silly) rule is one reason why so many people are suffering because modern medicine is losing the art of care and making everything too complex.

Let me start with two analogy to reinforce a point why our modern society is getting so ill, from digestion problem to cancer.  National Institute of Health (NIH) reports 60 to 70 million people affected by all digestive diseases.  The media and internet are making people aware of the rising and death rates of the dreaded C-word.  Just know that it is getting worse in the era of modern medicine and high technological gadgets.  Analogy one is my explaination of how healthy tissue becomes diseased.  Analogy two is a simple explaination of why there are so many chronic illness nowadays.

Analogy one: The healthy to disease continuum.

    1. Optimal Health —–> 2. Dysfunction / Symptoms? ——–> 3. Disease —–>4. Cancer?

  • Using Yoga to Help You Reduce Pain and to Walk More

walkingThis might not be shocking news but yoga has been shown in multiple studies to be highly effective in combating back pain.  As yoga has been more accepted by the public, I have seen and had to undo some people doing yoga the wrong way.  That being said, yoga can be harmful if you abuse the principles and make up your own rules.

The common reasons for getting injured from doing yoga are not warming up properly or not allowing your mind be in tune with the yoga flow (sequence of movement).  The mind and body are connected and if you join a class or decide to replicate a yoga video, a common scenario is to do these yoga poses with your mind on something else.

Now that we got the basic DON’T out of the way, I will go over specific yoga poses that are effective based on biomechanical principle and movement science.  If you have back pain, read the precursor article titled “How to Get More Out of Your Yoga Stretches When You Have Back Pain” which provides a hip warm-up that will allow you to get the most out of this article.  The walking cycle is simplified into two parts: stance and swing phase.

When your feet hit the ground, a specific sequence of muscles needs to fire in order to support and propel you forward.  Due to the modern shoe wear and “convenience era” aka sitting society, we have a higher tendency to overuse our Quadratus Lumborum, Hip Flexors and Quadriceps muscles.   (more…)

  • How to Help Superman Be More Unstoppable

superman-helpThis is the biggest weekend holiday coming up.  It is father’s day!….Of course I am biased and like to think I am superman.  I know my children think I am made of steel and can do anything and everything.  The reality is that everybody needs maintenance especially since modern society asks everyone to take huge responsibilities and forces us to be expert in multi-tasking to survive.   I will like to highlight common stiff patterns that I see in males that should not be as we age.  I hope to provide gentle suggestions or “nudges” to the fathers so tmhey can help themselves.  Remember no one likes to be reminded that they are getting old and told what to do.  Make it playful and hopefully change will happen.

    1. Sign #1: Inability to sit cross legged on the floor.  The second requirement is to be able to reach forward in all directions.  Males tend to be stiff in their hips and pelvis so sitting maybe hard already.  (I raise my hand…guilty)  On the pediatric rehab perspectives, sitting cross leg is a movement pattern I test routinely.  It is sad to see that many children cannot sit in this position for an extended period of time due to the modern shoe wear and comfy seating options nowadays.  That is another tangent.

A fun solution this is to play board games or do more outdoor family activities that (more…)

  • Spine and Sports Medicine Expert by Your Side

    IMG_4226

Hi everyone!  I would like to introduce myself.  I am Dr Danh Ngo and I help people find an alternative to pain killers, medications, procedures, and to avoid surgery.  Besides the medical title (label), I am more proud of being a father of two children.  I love being a father and I decided to venture into this small business arena to spend more time with them.  I love to listen to other parent’s story because no two stories are the same.  We all try our best to do our part in raising our little ones into wholesome and caring adults.

I would like to take this time to applaud everyone that is on this fitness journey.  If you are reading this article, you deserve an extra pat on the back for appreciating what us real humans have to say.  As a spine and sports medicine expert, I can lecture all the benefits of exercise and why one should do it.  I am NOT going to do that, but I would like to take this time to extend my medical expertise and background to keep you on this fitness train.

You may have heard that the hardest part of anything is the first step.  My opinion is that the hardest part is consistency and grit after the first step.   The secret ingredient to “GREAT” change, whether it is for weight loss or confidence within yourself, is having guidance.   A journey time frame cannot be predicted.  I can predict that it will come with many different emotions, like fear, insecurity, excitement, and life distractions that will cause you to lose focus.

This is one reason that I am taking the time to slow life down to introduce myself, not as a medical expert only, but a person that understands real things happen to real people.  If you are worried about that nagging stiffness when you exercise or after, I am here to provide guidance (only if you act on it).  If you are nervous about starting the fitness class after an extended period of absence, you are not alone.  Take that extra step and request a chat with me at revitalizerehab@gmail.com or click on the blue button below.

  • 3 Ways Teachers Can Help ReVITALize Their Body….and Have Fun Doing It Too

    summer and kids

Would it be nice to have that peace of mind that you can move like these children and dog?  After all, you spent more than half the year nurturing young minds and now your feet feels tired, knees might be stiff and neck “cracking” as you do a simple head turn.  If this sounds familiar, this is the perfect article to dive into, as I help guide you in what I recommend every one of my teacher members (clients).  If you have no pain or stiffness, I highly suggest you read my first article “3 Hidden Signs That Your Body Needs to Recover From The Grueling School Year” because I write about hidden signs that your body is low on fuel and at risk for injury.  I hinted that you can have no pain, but your body may be at risk for heart, lymphatic and muscle and joint fatigue syndrome.

HEALTH CONCERN # 1: Stiffness is a big hidden reason that can predispose you to muscle and joint pain.  If you have limited range of motion with this feeling of stiffness, weakness is a common reason for your body to tighten up.  If you cannot move well (like from weakness induce by fatigue), your body will tighten up to slow you down from moving poorly.  I highly advise you to read that last sentence 2-3 times slowly so you can truly comprehend what I just wrote.  In the first article, one of the hidden reason is being your ability to touch your toes without bending your knees.
